7 Key Insights: Therapists Reflect on Early Business Decisions

Remember those awkward teenage years when you wished you could go back in time and change a few things? Well, guess what? The same applies to building a private practice. We've all made those early business decisions that we now look back on with a raised eyebrow and a sigh. But hey, that's just part of the learning process, right?

Recently, I threw out a question to my amazing colleagues in the Balanced Practice Community for Therapists & Counselors:

"Looking back, if there was one thing you'd tweak about your early business decisions, what would it be?"

The responses I received were a goldmine of insights, offering valuable lessons for those just starting or looking to refine their existing practice. Here are some of the common themes that emerged:

1. Streamline Your Systems and Paperwork

Therapists often find themselves drowning in a sea of paperwork, which can take away from the precious time they spend with clients. Many of my colleagues wished they had invested in creating a streamlined and efficient system for handling paperwork (like a full-featured EHR), saving them from administrative headaches and freeing up more time for what they do best – helping people.

2. Consider Private Pay

Dealing with insurance can be a major pain in the... well, you know. Several therapists expressed regret for not going private pay from the start, saving themselves time, money, and frustration. If you're considering this route, do your research and weigh the pros and cons carefully. This isn’t about being anti-insurance, it’s about making careful and informed decisions about what’s right for you and your practice.

3. Establish a Solid Foundation

Before diving into the business side of things, it's crucial to have a solid understanding of your brand, values, and ideal client avatar (ICA). Several therapists wished they had focused on these foundational elements early on, as it would have provided a clear direction and helped them make more informed decisions throughout their practice's journey.

4. Optimize Your Online Presence

SEO: it's not just for tech geeks anymore. Search engine optimization (SEO) can be a powerful tool for attracting new clients. However, many therapists often overlook it until later in their practice's development. Several colleagues wished they had started focusing on SEO sooner, rather than waiting until later when it became more difficult to catch up. Additionally, some colleagues wished they had chosen a shorter domain name and email address, making it easier for potential clients to find and remember them. Think: easy to remember, easy to spell, easy to type!

One of the best ways to get started is by publishing your website ASAP. One-Page Wonder gives you the exact step-by-step (and click-by-click) instructions to get your own one-page website up in as little as one day, so you can start building SEO cred with Google right away.

5. Embrace Marketing

Marketing can be daunting for many therapists, who may not feel comfortable promoting their services. However, several colleagues wished they had been more open to exploring different marketing strategies, as it would have helped them reach a wider audience. Remember, marketing is not just about selling; it's about letting the world know about your expertise and the value you offer. Whether it's networking with other professionals, creating informative blog posts, or utilizing social media, don't shy away from marketing your practice.

6. Seek Guidance from a Business Coach or Mentor ASAP

Hindsight is 20/20, and many therapists expressed the wish they had sought guidance from a business coach or mentor earlier on. Having an experienced professional to provide tailored advice and support can save you time, money, and countless missteps.

7. Start Sooner

One of the most common regrets among therapists was not starting their private practice sooner. If you're thinking about starting your own practice, don't wait! Even if all you start with is a couple of clients a week on the side. The sooner you start, the sooner you can start building your dream business.

Take some time to reflect on your own business journey. What areas could you improve upon? What changes would make your practice more efficient, profitable, and fulfilling?

Remember, building a successful private practice is a continuous process of learning, adapting, and evolving. Embrace the challenges, celebrate the victories, and never stop striving to be the best therapist and business owner you can be.
